Post 2 Ch.2

Chapter 2 The Great Gatsby

1. The valley of ashes is a place where New York City dumps their ashes from many businesses and is described as a desolate place. The symbolic nature is that there is a difference in the standard of living because the rich people and poor people were separated. The was the Valley of Ashes is described makes it appear to be a unlivable place but it is also described as a place where men and houses are. Doctor T.J. is a eye doctor who wants people from West Egg and New York City to have him as a eye doctor which made him put up a big billboard up along the highway by the valley of ashes as a way to broadcast his business to people.

2. Wilson is a blonde with blue eyes and runs a car dealership. He is described as a man who has  lifeless personality. Tom is suppose to bring or sell Wilson a car but is taking away for the car to get fixed and when Wilson comments on this, Tom treats Wilson like he is not important. Nick feels disgusted with the way Tom's behavior is toward people. I feel that Tom thinks he is better than everyone which makes me not like him as a person.

3. The symbolic significant of the dog Tom gives Myrtle is that he treats Myrtle like he would treat a dog like she needs him and can't live without him. He doesn't value her as a person, and looks at her like a child.

4.  The narration is spotty because Nick was drunk the whole afternoon of the party. Some pertinent details were:
  • Company arrived: Myrtles sister Catherine, Mr. McKee
  • Myrtle changed her costume and her personality to be more dramatic
  • Catherine tells Nick that Myrtle can't stand her husband. Myrtle married her husband because she thought he was a gentlemen but she knows she made a mistake.
  • Catherine was the only one not drinking because she felt the need not to
  • Myrtle tells Nick the whole story about how her and Tom met
  • Tom hits Myrtle because she keeps talking about Daisy and he doesn't like when she says Daisy's name
  • Nick and Mr. McKee leave together
  • Nick wakes up in Mr. McKee's bed and goes to Pennsylvania Station to wait for the four o' clock train
5. The purpose of Chapter 2 is it explains who the characters are an introduces them. It explains the relationships between the characters. It explains how Tom and Myrtle met and shows Tom as who he really is as a person. He is a cheater and a liar and looks down on people. The chapter shows us that Nick doesn't really think Tom is a good person. It also shows us that Nick is easily taken advantage of, because of what happened after the party.
